Friday, 23 April 2010 06:43 - Survey results

Between June and November 2009 young people between 11 and 26 years from several European countries and Israel participated in a survey on the topic of nanotechnologies containing focus group discussions and an online questionnaire which was published in eight European languages and filled in for valuable analysis by 1.969 young people. Interviews with experts of different related fields, e.g. teachers and science communication experts and national context questionnaires – filled in by representatives of five European countries - supplemented the survey.

The “report on the analysis of survey responses” that can be downloaded below is the outcome of a comprehensive survey on young people’s knowledge, interests and attitudes about nanotechnologies carried out within the NANOYOU project by the Austrian institute Centre for Social Innovation.

In general, results show that there is a high interest for nanotechnologies among young people and a wish for more profound knowledge in the future. However, the interest for NT is bigger than the knowledge, and young people would like to know more about it in the future.

NT is already part of future education and professional career considerations. Nevertheless young people are also very aware about risks and societal impact. Although they widely believe in positive developments in the future, they remain sceptical and critical against major issues as privacy, consumer protections, environment and health.

Concerning gender there is a gap concerning interest and knowledge. But seemingly there are potentials. In general, young people think that NT will improve our lives in future. They are mostly optimistic up to euphoric, but at the same time believe in risks and are aware of negative impact as well. For further developments and applications young people ask for independent regulation and control agencies. School, TV and radio, movies and internet are the most important sources for information about NT for young people.

Young people also wish to learn more at science centres and museums, at events and in seminars, courses and workshops, more than they do up to now. Seemingly, they want to gain more thorough information about NT.

In the artists' words, "to establish a contact with that parallele, invisible and for most of us unknown world means, for art, to discover surprising and powerful technologies and revolutionary ways of expression that promote the development of new asthetic approaches, alternative points of view, different interpretations of the world.

"The collision – or to better say the meeting – of art with nanotechnology brings to the creation of artworks most of the times unaccessible to human eyes, that represents a concrete aesthetic paradox: an invisible visual art."

In the Nanºart website you will see some images of artworks done at the micro and the nanoscale which have been part of several exhibitions. You can also visit the projects blog or see a video on the creation of one of their artworks.

In this experiment you will analyse some innovative materials that are highly water repellent, stainless and require less cleaning thanks to their surface nano-engineering. Those materials have been developed using nature as an inspiration, since some plant leaves have exceptional properties due to their surface composition.

The property you will analyse is the superhydrophobic effect found in some leaves, such as the lotus leaf. The effect is due to interplay of surface chemistry and surface topography at the micro- and nano-level. Download the documents below to carry out the experiment.

Think of gold as you know it. Gold (Au, atomic number 79) is the most malleable and ductile metal of all; it can be beaten to very thin sheets of material and rolled or bent as desired. This has been known and done for centuries.

In this experiment you will investigate nanoparticles of gold or nano-gold! The properties of nano-gold are very different and it all has to do with the size of the nanoparticles. Download the documents below to lear more about this experiment.

We have many natural nanomaterials around us and in this experiment you will learn that two very common materials, milk and gelatine, are indeed two of these. The properties of these materials are directly connected to their molecular supra-organisation, which includes nanotechnologies.

If you want to know more about the properties of milk and gelatine do the experiment that NANOYOU proposes you. You will find the information you need in the documents below.

24 pilot schools have been selected as the first to launch NANOYOU into the classroom. These schools are based in Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Portugal, Romania, UK, Slovakia and Spain. A list of the participating pilot schools can be found hereunder.

At the end of January, teachers from the selected schools will take part in a training workshop in Brussels, organised by ORT and EUN with the collaboration of iNANO. The training aims to introduce and explain the different NANOYOU experiments and activities that teachers can use in their classrooms.

The pilot schools will have a coordination and management tool at their disposal (https://europeanschoolnet.basecamphq.com/login) in order to communicate with each other, share useful documents and files, leave messages, ask questions and be in contact with the project administrators.

Pilot schools will be the first group to try out activities in class. Thereafter, they will be invited to post their results and impressions on the website. By sharing their experiences with other teachers, they will offer support for other schools interested in taking part in NANOYOU.

Non pilot schools interested in NANOYOU will be able to use the implemented NANOYOU materials in their class at a later stage. They will then benefit from advice, help and support from pilot schools that ran the activities beforehand.

For further information please contact nanoyou@eun.org

Six teams of youngsters participated in the contest and spent a weekend working on the production of short videos on `Living a 2.0 city´. The videos will be available soon.

Participants were accompanied intensively by the jury members, and spent day and night to transform their innovative storyboards into 3 minute videos on ‘Living a 2.0 city’.

To blow off steam, everybody was challenged to participate with interactive experiments, providing real-life experience with sensors and chips: `What does it feel like to be tracked real-time ?´ `What does it feel like to interact with a computer, using a motion pod instead of a mouse?´

At the end of the weekend four videos were nominated and their creators were invited to present their videos at NANOYOU's public debate at the Cité des sciences et de l’ industrie in Paris, on April 8, 2010.

The group was very diverse, with participants coming from different backgrounds such as design, engineering, art history, communication or video technique, and a multidisciplinary jury with engineers, a social scientist specializing in story boarding techniques, an architect, a science educator, a decorative art teacher and an interaction designer.

Winners of the picture contest

The jury has selected 3 winners amongst the total of 67 pictures that participated in the contest.

The selection was done according to the following criteria:

The relevance with which the theme was addressed, the originality and the lucidity of the mise-en-scène of the intelligent environment

The consideration of scientific and technological trends

The consideration of ethical, social and legal risks and opportunities associated with the use of intelligent environments and which influence daily life directly

The artistic and creative quality

The first prize (500 euros) has been awarded to “A dog and its chip” by Cytronne (France)

Title: A dog and its chip…
Keywords: RFID chip
Location: Belledone (French Alps)
Visible/invisible: A litte chip, a smart card…
Advantages: Traceability. In case you loose your dog or if it gets stolen… Not at all cumbersome ...
Risks: Traceability. A smart chip on a living being which permits to track its trail, with all the excesses that may lead to ...
Ctrl/Esc: It is us, human being, that "chip" our animals! But is also an obligation…

The second prize (250 euros) has been awarded to “Blooming nanoTech” by Mey (Romania)

Title: Blooming nanoTech
Keywords: music pixels nano
Location: Cismigiu Parc, Bucuresti, Romania
Date: 2001-03-20
Visible/invisible: the iPod in the wild/the hard work and delicate pieces that went into the building process of such a nano music player
Advantages: Nature embracing technology, with nanotech nature has room to expand. Less materials, smaller devices and greener tech, can really make an impact.
Risks: We must not forget that nanotechnology is still not 100% green. Nature cannot biodegradate man-made items. It is also quite expensive and not anyone can afford it.
Ctrl/Esc: People can control the music and videos played on the iPod or they could just be carried away on the wings of natures own music and color.

And the third prize (150 euros) has been awarded to Liutic (Italy).

Title: Tech's Risks
Keywords: risks, food, GMOs, tech polllution, ethics, accountability
Location: During the meal
Visible/invisible: The picture shows that what we eat is not what we believe to eat. Thus, the plate with electrical cables are being confused with a plate of spaghetti, a glass of ...
Advantages: Endless benefits that technology offers us today. That would our life be without technology?
Risks: Only one: the risk to pass ethical limits. The risk to not longer understand the boundaries between human and technological, which often meet, but are not identical.
Ctrl/Esc: Ctrl: all the technology must be created, managed and used according to the basic principles of ethics . Esc: escaping is not possible, the responsibility is ours, of each individual.

On the 5-6 December 2009 six teams of youngsters took part in the NANOYOU video contest and spent a weekend working on the production of short videos on `Living a 2.0 city´. Now you can watch the finalist videos and enjoy the results of that creative weekend!

{component}index.php?option=com_video&view=video{/component}

Participants worked day and night to transform their innovative storyboards into 3 minute videos on ‘Living a 2.0 city’. The youngsters were challenged to participate with interactive experiments, providing real-life experience with sensors and chips: `What does it feel like to be tracked in real time?´ `What does it feel like to interact with a computer, using a motion pod instead of a mouse?´

The group was very diverse, with participants coming from different backgrounds such as design, engineering, art history, communication or video technique, and a multidisciplinary jury with engineers, a social scientist specializing in story boarding techniques, an architect, a science educator, a decorative arts teacher and an interaction designer.

At the end of the weekend four videos were nominated and their creators were invited to present their videos at the NANOYOU public debate which took place at the Cité des sciences et de l’industrie in Paris, on April 8, 2010. "Nadim et Suzanne" by Sophie Bessette, Louise Dubois and Aurélie Ponsin was voted by the audience as the winner of the contest.

The smart plaster is a functional system using nanotechnology which performs tests on blood samples that are essential to medical diagnosis. The advantage is its simple graphical display, which sets it apart from the usual blood test reports. It provides an overall, clear and fast report, on a device which is attached to the patient. Test results can therefore not be confused amongst patients.

The Time for Nano Project aims at engaging the general public, with a special attention to young people, on benefits and risks related to nanoscale research, engineering and technology, through specific informal education products.

Science centers in Italy, UK, Belgium, France, Germany, Finland, Portugal, Poland and Turkey will organize “Nanodays”, events with demonstrations, experiments, games, meetings and discussions about nanotechnology.

Students from high schools can participate in the Time for Nano video contest, a competition to produce the most creative, scientifically sound, though provoking video on the dilemmas posed by nanotechnology.
