Creado en 1990 en Viena, el Centro por la Innovación Social (ZSI) es un instituto de investigación sin ánimo de lucro políticamente independiente para que Europa afirme su liderazgo temático para el avance de la innovación social y el fomento de una sociedad abierta y unida firmemente.

El ZSI aplica servicios de investigación socio-científicos, educativos, consultivos y de trabajo en red para reducir las diferencias entre las necesidades sociales y el potencial de la sociedad del conocimiento. Aunando los fundamentos científicos con aplicaciones prácticas, el ZSI establece un vínculo entre disciplinas y sectores.

El trabajo se organiza y financia proyecto a proyecto como resultado de convocatorias de proyectos y concursos públicos, nacionales, europeos e internacionales.
