NANOYOU picture contest

The Nanoyou picture contest “My intelligent environment” ran from December 7th, 2009 till July 1st, 2010 and was open to people aged 16-25. Youngsters were invited to portrait how nanotechnologies are becoming part of our lives and to discuss which could be the possible benefits and risks. All pictures had to be documented by means of a dedicated form.

Winners of the picture contest

 The jury has selected 3 winners amongst the total of 67 pictures that participated in the contest.

 The selection was done according to the following criteria:

• The relevance with which the theme was addressed, the originality and the lucidity of the mise-en-scène of the intelligent environment
• The consideration of scientific and technological trends
• The consideration of ethical, social and legal risks and opportunities  associated with the use of intelligent environments and which influence daily life directly
• The artistic and creative quality

 

The first prize (500 euros) has been awarded to “A dog and its chip” by Cytronne (France)

The second prize (250 euros) has been awarded to “Blooming nanoTech” by Mey (Romania)

Title: Blooming nanoTech

Visible/invisible: the iPod in the wild/the hard work and delicate pieces that went into the building process of such a nano music player
Advantages: Nature embracing technology, with nanotech nature has room to expand. Less materials, smaller devices and greener tech, can really make an impact.
Risks: We must not forget that nanotechnology is still not 100% green. Nature cannot biodegradate man-made items. It is also quite expensive and not anyone can afford it.
Ctrl/Esc: People can control the music and videos played on the iPod or they could just be carried away on the wings of natures own music and color.

 

And the third prize (150 euros) has been awarded to Liutic (Italy).

Advantages: Endless benefits that technology offers us today. That would our life be without technology?
Risks: Only one: the risk to pass ethical limits. The risk to not longer understand the boundaries between human and technological, which often meet, but are not identical.
Ctrl/Esc: Ctrl: all the technology must be created, managed and used according to the basic principles of ethics . Esc: escaping is not possible, the responsibility is ours, of each individual.
